In Dubai, summer is peak moving season. Between May and September, over 60 percent of all residential moves take place. School summer holidays prompt families to relocate, annual tenancy contracts expire, and expats rotate between assignments. But shifting home in 45°C temperatures and high humidity brings unique challenges that demand smart preparation.
The critical rule: turn on the AC 24 hours before moving day
The single most common mistake in summer moves is leaving utility activations until the last minute. When an apartment or villa has sat closed in summer, the ambient indoor temperature can reach 48°C.
- Transfer DEWA and your district cooling account (Empower, Tabreed, or Emicool) at least 48 hours prior to your move date.
- Set the thermostats to 21°C the night before so the walls, floors, and air are thoroughly cooled before doors are propped open for moving.
- Never expect movers to carry heavy wardrobes into a boiling concrete shell; doing so is a safety hazard and can warp wooden furniture, melt adhesives, and ruin leather upholstery.
Items that should NEVER ride in the moving truck
The cargo bed of a moving truck can heat up significantly while driving on Sheikh Zayed Road or waiting in an outdoor loading bay. Certain belongings must travel with you in your air-conditioned car:
- Wax candles and diffusers: Candles will melt into an oily puddle in under an hour, destroying everything in the carton.
- Cosmetics, perfumes & skincare: Expensive serums and creams break down or spoil when subjected to 50°C cargo heat.
- Sensitive electronics: Tablets, laptops, cameras, batteries, and gaming consoles should be moved in your personal vehicle.
- Medications and baby formula: Temperature-sensitive medicines lose efficacy if heated.
- Chocolates, pantry oils & wine: High temperatures spoil wines and melt kitchen pantry items instantly.
Smart scheduling: beating the midday sun and rush
How you time your summer move determines whether the day is smooth or exhausting:
- Book an early morning slot: A 7:00 AM or 7:30 AM arrival allows the heaviest loading to occur before the midday heat peak.
- Avoid month-end weekends: The last Friday and Saturday of June, July, and August are the most congested moving dates in Dubai. Mid-month and mid-week slots offer maximum crew focus and schedule flexibility.
- Check tower loading bay height and cover: Underground and covered service bays keep goods and crew sheltered from direct sun.
Childcare and pet safety on moving day
During loading, main apartment doors and building corridors remain open for several hours. In summer, an escaped cat or dog can suffer heatstroke in minutes, and young children are vulnerable to moving equipment.
