12 moving tips that actually save money in Dubai

Most moving advice online is filler. These are the twelve things that, in our experience across two decades of Dubai relocations, make a measurable difference to what you pay and how the day goes.

Before you book

1. 1Declutter first, not after. Volume drives price. Every item you sell or donate before the survey comes straight off the quote.
2. 2Get the survey done, always. A phone estimate is a guess and guesses get revised upward once the crew arrives.
3. 3Move mid-month if you can. Month-end is when every Dubai tenancy ends, so availability is tightest and flexibility lowest.
4. 4Ask what the insurance actually covers, and get it in writing on the quote rather than described verbally.

Packing

1. 1Do not buy boxes. Any competent mover includes materials in the quote, if yours bills per box afterwards, that is a red flag about everything else.
2. 2Pack plates vertically, on edge, like records. They survive far better than stacked flat.
3. 3Photograph cabling before you unplug anything. Reconnecting a TV setup from memory wastes an evening.
4. 4Label by destination room, not contents. You need to know where the box goes, not what is in it.

Moving day

1. 1Keep passports, Emirates ID and valuables with you. Never on the truck.
2. 2Pack a first-night box and load it last so it comes off first.
3. 3Walk the crew supervisor through the property before loading begins, flagging fragile items in person.
4. 4Do a final sweep of every cupboard, balcony and storage room before the truck pulls away, this is where things get left.
