The side-label rule: never label only the top
Writing "Kitchen - Fragile" on the top flaps of a box seems logical until moving day arrives. In the truck and in your new apartment, boxes are stacked four high against walls. When boxes are stacked, top labels become completely invisible. Always label the sides of the box on at least two adjacent faces so you can identify the contents without unstacking half the room.
Pack dishes vertically like vinyl records
Most people pack plates stacked flat on top of each other. But ceramic and porcelain plates are strongest on edge and weakest across their center. If the truck hits a speed bump, a flat stack transfers shock directly to the bottom plate, causing it to shatter. Wrap each plate in paper and pack them vertically on edge inside heavy-duty cartons with crumpled paper cushioning the top and bottom.
Use socks and linens as free cushioning buffers
You do not need to spend extra money wrapping everyday glassware in reams of bubble wrap. Slip clean, thick athletic socks over drinking glasses and wine stems. Use your towels, bed linens, and hoodies to cushion small appliances, blenders, and toaster ovens inside boxes. You have to move your clothes anyway—make them work for you!
Photograph every electronic setup before unplugging
Behind your television, soundbar, gaming setup, and Wi-Fi router lies a jungle of HDMI, optical, and power cables. Take two clear photos of the back panel before pulling any plugs. Put the corresponding cords into a labeled zip-bag and tape it directly to the TV stand or device.
Prepare the "first-night survival box"
Moving day is exhausting, and the last thing you want at 9:00 PM is searching through twenty identical cardboard boxes for a phone charger or toothbrush. Pack one clearly marked clear plastic bin or overnight duffel bag containing:
- Phone chargers and power banks
- Toilet paper, hand soap, and fresh bath towels
- Essential medications and first aid kit
- Clean bedsheets and pillows for the first night
- Electric kettle, tea/coffee mugs, and bottled water
- Emirates IDs, tenancy documents, and building access cards
